Chlorine Burnout

January 29, 2026

PWWSD#13 initiated a chlorine burnout through our District as part of the maintenance to ensure water quality. The term burnout is commonly used because free chlorine is a much more powerful disinfectant that combined chlorine. Free chlorine will oxidize nitrifying bacteria and keep it in check. You may notice a stronger chlorine smell, different taste, discolored water or even some sediment in the water. If you find the chlorine taste unpleasant, it can be helpful to leave an uncovered pitcher of water sit overnight, which will allow some of the chlorine to evaporate and possibly help improve the taste.
